And staying alert includes NOT using a cell phone for talking or texting, NOT reading anything (including a map), NOT drinking before taking the wheel, etc.
Be sure you know what each state or locality's laws are. The state of California, for example, now requires that people don't use cell phones in cars unless you have some kind of hands-free set-up. There is no such law in the states of New Mexico or Texas, but certain cities have no-cell-phone laws. So you need to make sure of what the laws are, too.
