To solve this equation first what you have to do is isolate the variable and its coefficient(3). So what you have to do is first add 6 to each side of the equation ( remember you have to do the opposite operations.) Then you would be left with 3y=26. Next what you do is divide each side of the equation by the coefficient. Then you will be left with what y equals to.

To solve for y, first, we must isolate the term with y to one side of the equation. We can see that on the left side of the equation, the term with y is 3y, but the left side also has -6 in it. Thus we transfer it on the right, but its sign becomes the opposite (positive in this case):
3y - 6 = 20
3y = 20 + 6
Then we combine the terms on the right side:
3y = 26
To get y alone, we must divide all terms in the equation by the numerical coefficient of y (or the number beside y), which is 3. Thus,
3y / 3 = 26 / 3
y = 26/3 or 8.67

3y - 6 = 20
3y = 20 + 6
Then we combine the terms on the right side:
3y = 26
To get y alone, we must divide all terms in the equation by the numerical coefficient of y (or the number beside y), which is 3. Thus,
3y / 3 = 26 / 3
y = 26/3 or 8.67

3y-6=20
Add 6 to both sides.
3y = 26
Divide both sides by 3
y = 8 2/3
Add 6 to both sides.
3y = 26
Divide both sides by 3
y = 8 2/3
