(-3)^2 = (-3)(-3) = +9
-3^2 = -(3^2) = -9

Review the order of operations.

-23 subtracted from 17 is 17-(-23) = 17+23 = 40
-23-17 is 17 subtracted from -23 = -40

Get out your number line and review how to do subtractions and negative values.
