Just work your way out from the inside
-1(-a)^2 + (-(-a))^2
= -1(-a)^2 + (a)^2
= -1*a^2 + a^2
= -a^2+a^2
= 0
recall that (-a)^2 = (-a)(-a) = +a^2
-1(-a)^2 + (-(-a))^2
= -1(-a)^2 + (a)^2
= -1*a^2 + a^2
= -a^2+a^2
= 0
recall that (-a)^2 = (-a)(-a) = +a^2
