The area of canada is approximately 1x10(Exponent)7, and the area of Mexico is approximately 2x10 (exponent)6 square kilometers. The area of Canada is approximately how many times the area of Mexico?

When do they mean "how many time?" do they mean I have to put it in standard notation and subtract? I'm kind of confuse with these lesson?

1 answer

simplify the situation.
Suppose I compare the number 3 with the number 12
Would you agree that 12 is 4 times the number 3 ?
What did I do with 12 and 3 to get 4 ?
Did I subtract them? no way
Did I divide them ? yeahhh

so area of Canada = 1 x 10^7
and area of Mexico= 2 x 10^6

how many times larger ????
1x10^7/2x10^6
= (1/2)(10) = 5

So Canada is 5 times larger than Mexico
