why is race and ethnicity important to United States society?

The United States is a nation of immigrants. All of our ancestors arrived here from other continents and countries. Even native Americans emigrated here some 10,000 years ago.
I believe that the reason that the U.S. is so successful is because of the genes, hopes, dreams, and values of our diverse ethnic and racial groups. We are alive and moving -- rather than stagnating in just one racial and ethnic group.
What do you think, Scooby?

To me, race and ethnicity means the wonderful mix of peoples with different customs that make up our complex society.
How can people judge others by their race when many of us are products of more than one race and ethnic group?
