A salesman is paid a monthly salary of $6,000 and a 5% commission on goods he sells above $20,000 each month. In a certain month the salesman earned $13, 000. How much money was the sales of the goods that month?

13,000 = 6,000 +.05(x-20,000)

First find the difference:
$13,000 - $6000=$7000
Then: 100/5 * 7000 =$140,000
