    a = first number
b = second number
Conditions:
a + b = 39
2 a + 3 b = 101
________________
a + b = 39 Subtract b to both sides
a + b - b = 39 - b
a = 39 - b
2 a = 2 ( 39 - b )
2 a = 78 - 2 b
2 a + 3 b = 101
78 - 2 b + 3 b = 101
78 + b = 101 Subtract 78 to both sides
78 + b - 78 = 101 - 78
b = 23
a = 39 - b
a = 39 - 23
a = 16
First number = 16
Second number = 23

b = second number
Conditions:
a + b = 39
2 a + 3 b = 101

a = 39 - b
a = 39 - 23
a = 16
First number = 16
Second number = 23
