Using the principles of bond breaking and bond making, how can I explain why there is no change in temperature in phase changes?
In a phase change, for example when boiling water is converted to steam, no O-H bonds are broken and none are made. Enough energy must be added to the liquid water to allow the kinetic energy of the molecules to overcome the intermolecular forces (H bonding, if you will) but that is all that happens, basically.
