Hi,
I just got my test back :( got 53% (16/30)
how would I calculate my updated marks if the first test is worth 36%? Its my first test.

Assuming that by "updated marks" you mean your average test score, and assuming that the tests are of equal weight, your average is just the average of the scores:
(36+53)/2
Why do you append the sentence "It's my first test."? You just told us your first test was 36%. That implies that the "it" is your 53% test, but that is not your first test.
If you plan to go anywhere with math, you need to be a bit more precise in your language -- and, presumably, your thinking!
