How is manifest destiny important to our past and future? How is it important?

I don't really get what manifest destiny is... all we did in class is read O'Sullivans document called Manifest Destiny

Oh for more info, this is the time when O'Sullivan was saying in his document that it is our absolute destiny (from god) that america should move westward.
