distributive property:

x * (2x^2 - x- 3)
-1* (2x^2 - x- 3)

= 2 x^3 - x^2 - 3 x - 2 x^2 + x + 3
combine like terms
= 2 x^3 - 3 x^2 - 2 x + 3
