When x is increased by 5, the result is 60% of increasing x by 15. What is the value of x?
I got this far:
x+5 = 0.60(x+15)
x+5 = 0.60x + 9
x = 0.60x + 4
What is the next step?

x = 0.60x + 4
x - 0.6x = 4
0.4x = 4
x = 4/0.4
x = 10
x - 0.6x = 4
0.4x = 4
x = 4/0.4
x = 10

Where did the 0.4x come from?
Answered by
Ms. Sue
I subtracted 0.6x from both sides of the equation.
x - 0.6x = 0.4x
x - 0.6x = 0.4x

I'm sorry- I don't understand how x minus 0.6x equals 0.4x?

Ms. Sue
1.00 - 0.6 = 0.4
Think of money. If you have $1.00 and spend $0.60, you'll have $0.40 left.

Oh I think I understand, because of the invisible coefficient of 1 in front of x, it'd be 1x-0.6x = 0.4x?
