This is just a work problem in disguise. Together the cars must cover a distance.

1/x = 1/4 + 1/6 = 5/12
x = 12/5

Check. Say the distance is 120 miles
In 2.4 hours, the car covers 2.4/4 = 0.6 the distance.
In 2.4 hours, the van covers 2.4/6 = .4 the distance. ok
