How do you think America might be different if the Erie Canal had not been built?
New York would not be our financial capital of the world now. The North may have lost the Civil War since it served as a critical supply line. There would be no cost-effective way of shipping bulk goods which would create that business to go under.

It helped strengthen NYC, but didn't guarantee its success. I doubt if the North would have lost the war. In time, railroads would surpass the canal as efficient transportation.
