    close, but "difference" implies subtraction
so "eight times the difference of a number and 3 --- 8(x-3)
so ...
8(x-3) = 6(x+1)
    
so "eight times the difference of a number and 3 --- 8(x-3)
so ...
8(x-3) = 6(x+1)
