I don't understand how you calculate them in the first place?

If I tell you that

2x = 10

how do you find x? You just divide by 2 on both sides of the equation, so you wind up with x all alone.

Similarly, if you have

D = 2zv

and you want to find v, just recognize that

D = (2z)v

and you want to divide by the 2z to get v by itself. Thus,

D/(2z) = v
