The Erie Canal connected New York City up the Hudson River and through the canal to the Great Lakes.
It is much, much cheaper to ship grain and stuff by boat than by road.
So that opened up the mid west and made NY a big city.

That is why NY caught up to those earlier big cities, the cheap shipping to and from the west through the canal.
