In New York a taxi costs 72 cents for the first 1/10th of a mile and 15 cents for every additional 1/10 mile. How much does it cost to drive 6 miles?

.72 + .15(6-.1)/.1 = $9.57

Or, you can think of it as .15 * 60 plus an extra .57 for the 1st 1/10 mile.
