You're right and your mom is wrong. Cities were not safe, but had many criminals plus unsafe living and working conditions.

People moved from farms I think looking for jobs, not so much for Harvard.

I agree with your mom and Damon that education was not a prime motivation for moving to cities. However, I still maintain that cities were not safe.

The one argument for education is that settlement houses and some churches in the cities had some classes in English and home making skills.
