How do I solve this problem without calculator? I keep coming up with 270 but the calculator says 275

Thirty-three is 12% of what number?

0.12n = 33

n = 33/0.12

n = 275

33 = .12 x

x = 33/.12 = 3300/12
well
3300/10 = 330
3300/11 = 300
so I would do what you did and say 300-30 = 270
which is not a bad estimate, off by 5.
(5/275) *100 = 1.8 percent

Of course you could be more accurate with long division.
