How do two fractions have a sum of exactly 1

Answers

Answered by Damon
well, easy
think of some
1/2 + 1/2 = 2/2 = 1
1/3 + 2/3 = 3/3 = 1
sum of tops must equal denominator when denominators are the same
that means you need to put them over a common denominator, but you have to do that to add them anyway.

1 pizza

Cut into two equal pieces and you have 1/2 + 1/2 = 1

Cut into three equal pieces and you have 1/3 + 1/3 + 1/3 = 1

Cut it into two unequal pieces, you may have 1/4 + 3/4 = 1

Thanks Damon, Is there an easy way to explain it to a third grader?
Answered by Ms. Sue
I suggest you demonstrate with a pizza or with a cookie or even a piece of paper.
