The purpose of a softbox is to soften - hence the name "soft"box the incoming light to decrease sharpness and glare in a photo. Therefore, to soften the light, they "diffuse the light". Hence, the use of diffusing material.
O They have an umbrella on the front. ( No the BACK would have an umbrella to be like a parabola focuser. Sort of how your car lights are curved at the back and sides to reflect the light in a focused manner. Like a U-shape)
O The insides of the softbox are gold. (No gold would change the color of the light reflected. The light would become yellowish which might be too warm. You normally see a white/blue light from a softbox.)
O They pass light through a diffusing material in the front. (Yes.)
O They let light out both the front and the back of the device. (No the whole point is to focus light at an object. Softboxes might let a little light out the back, but they are meant to focus a very soft light to prevent sharp shadows and other things.)
If multiple choice choose the last two. If you have to choose one choose the diffusing material one.
