1) The Mallards seem to have a pretty strained relationship. When hearing of Mr. Mallard's death, Louise seemed upset at first, but when the situation sank in and she gave it more thought, she seemed relieved. I don't think Mr. Mallard was truly unkind to Louise, but I think that she felt trapped in the marriage. In the past, it was heavily frowned upon to get a divorce, and it was almost unheard of. When people got married, it was for life. When Mr. Mallard's life ended, Mrs. Mallard wouldn't be confined like that anymore.
