I first read Diary of a Young Girl by Anne Frank shortly after it was published. I was a teenager but was amazed that she could appear so normal in the face of what she was going through. Her cheerfulness attested to the indomitable spirit of youth. Perhaps it's human to be optimistic. Certainly many of the Holocaust victims remained upbeat until near the end.

Of course she gets depressed! She can't go outside the Annex -- and cooped up in a few rooms. Again -- that is a very normal reaction. She was confined to the Annex for over two years! Ye gads!
