In 1 and 2, I'd make sure all verbs are in past tense. Switching back and forth from past to present and then to past again is inconsistent and confusing.
In 1, I'd make this correction:
The king looked a little upset with a soldier on each side.
In 2, I'd make these corrections:
The second man seemed to be stunned to see that. The king was able to defeat the second man with his lie.
Or do you mean this: "defeat the second man who had lied."
In 3, I'd make these corrections, including keeping the verbs in present tense:
How about this picture? Can you describe it? An old man is walking away with a golden apple in his hand. He is holding the golden apple up high.
