1. is ok
2. is not
A study is a discrete thing. If there were several studies you would say "according to studies".
However you would not say "a research" because research is an action. It should be; "According to research"...
or according to research projects or according to research results
1. According to a study, students who eat breakfast do better in the classroom.
2. According to a research, students who eat breakfast do better in the classroom.

Are both OK? Does 'study' in #1 mean 'research' in #2? Do we have to put 'a' before 'study' or 'research'?

INSTEAD OF JUST SAYING YES OR NO-
I WILL GIVE YOU MORE INPUT!
"A RESEARCH" doesn't really make sense where there is grammar. It would be different to say a research paper. By only saying "A research" It makes it sound like an incomplete sentence even though you are starting one. So instead, the first one is better because of its proper transition in writing.
A study could be studying something. It could be finding research and putting it into something such as a paper. For example (TRUE INFO) According to a new study, only half of abortions are considered safe. It sounds like it flows better than According to new research, only half of abortions are considered safe. It depends on how you prefer it to sound, but personally saying "A STUDY" sounds more professional than saying "RESEARCH" saying "A RESEARCH" MAKES NO SENSE.
"A STUDY" IS FINE BY ITSELF. LISTEN TO THE EXAMPLES:
"ACCORDING TO STUDY, every 1 in 3000 have a disease called Neurofibromatosis causes tumors to grow on the body."
NOW REPLACE WITH A STUDY, A RESEARCH, AND RESEARCH. JUST LIKE IF YOU SAID RESEARCHES YOU WOULDN'T INCLUDE AN A before RESEARCHES. IT JUST DEPENDS ON GRAMMAR AND PLACEMENT.
