I would multiply the 2nd equation by 4, then subtract ...
5x+4y=8
4x+4y=28
x = -20

sub into 2nd
-20 + y = 7
y = 27

x = -20 , y = 27
5x + 4y = 8
x + y = 7

Find x :
x = 7 - y

5(7 - y) + 4y = 8
35 - 5y + 4y = 8
-y = 8 - 35
y = 27

x = 7 + 27
x = 34

y = 27
x = 34
