subtract 7 from both sides
3 x = 2
divide both sides by 3
x = 2/3

2). -3(x + 5) + 3 = 12
subtract 3 from both sides
-3(x+5) = 9
divide both sides by -3
x+5 = -3
subtract 5 from both sides
x = -8
