-1 3/4 = p - 1/2
Multiply through by 4
4(-7/4) = 4(p) - 4(1/2)
-7 = 4p - 2
-7+2 = 4p
-5=4p
p = -5/4 = -1 1/4

Add 1/2 to both sides of the equation.
